PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Albi 487S is a rust inhibitive, phenolic modified alkyd
primer, designed as a shop coat or field primer for
structural steel and other metal substrates. It has been
specifically formulated for compatibility with Albi
Intumescent Fireproofing materials, strong solvent
base paints and mastics, which may lift or blister other
primer coatings.
RECOMMENDED USES:
487S is recommended for use whenever a top quality
metal primer is required. Primary applications are for
installations to be fireproofed with solvent based
fireproofing coatings or mastic systems such as Albi Clad
800 when such fireproofing will be exposed to
weathering, humid or corrosive environments.

APPLICATION:
Recommended Thickness: Surface profiles and porosity should be considered when determining coverage rates.
For use under normal interior conditions, apply 1 to 1-1/2 mils DFT at a theoretical coverage rate of 962 to 641
square feet per gallon. For corrosive or exterior exposures, apply at 2 to 3 mils DFT at a theoretical coverage rate
of 481 to 320 square feet per gallon. Application may be made by brush, roller or spray gun using standard
equipment and techniques.
Surface Preparation: Surface preparation should follow the recommendations of the Steel Structures Painting
Council. In general, standard instructions for painting metal surfaces apply: Be sure surfaces are clean of all dust,
rust, mill scale, grease, oil, or other foreign residue that may impair adhesion. Sandblasting is required when the
surface is encrusted with rust, scale or other bond inhibiting residue not readily removed by hand or chemical
means. In areas where sandblasting is not permitted or feasible, power cleaning for steel (SSPC-SP3-63) is
recommended.
Thinning: For brush application, dilute 4 parts Albi 487S with one part high flash naphtha. For spray application dilute
4 parts Albi 487S with one part toluene, xylene, or similar aromatic solvents.
